That really depends on the level of play that is going to take place with the table.
I know some ping pong players that need a ton of space around the table since they play so aggressively with the ball flying far behind each end of the table after a fierce strike, it is a subjective question and it is up to you to decide how much space you want around the table as you are playing the game.
